The Camel Song

Words and Music by Tory Hoff

This song is meant to have an underlying rhythm analogous to camels steadily and surely crossing a desert on the way to Bethlehem. Sometimes to accentuate this image I have asked children to imitate the footwork of camels with their arms by alternating between placing their left hand on their left knee and then their right hand upon their right knee, and so on, and then add to it forward and back head movements like camels when they are striding along.

The last section of this song is more syncopated. When teaching the song to children, one might mention that this section is syncopated because the camels are more and more eager to arrive, the closer they get to Bethlehem.
